Frequently Asked Questions
I’ve never done any type of martial arts before. What can I expect?
We focus on creating a positive, non-intimidating gym culture where students of all levels and backgrounds are welcomed and prepared for success. When you reach out to sign up for classes or to learn more about Forged, one of our coaches will be in touch to schedule an in-person appointment. They will walk you through the basic class structure, provide details about gym membership, and answer any questions you have. All classes start on time, so arriving a few minutes early is encouraged to allow you or your child time to stretch and prepare for class. There is limited seating available in the gym, and we encourage parents to stay and watch their child’s first class.
During class, you can expect an encouraging team environment where our coaches will take extra time to work with you or your child individually as you learn the basics of the class structure. During class, you will be working with other students to hone your skills. This means that there is physical contact with other students, however we never allow students (of any level) to hit or hurt each other. We utilize a variety of safety gear including gloves and pads so everyone stays safe and has fun! You will not be expected to partner with anyone who makes you feel uncomfortable. If for example you prefer to work with a female partner, you are welcome to tell a coach who will ensure you are paired up with a female partner. Our goal is to ensure that all students have a fun and safe experience while learning self-defense!
My child has never participated in any sports or organized activities before. Will they be able to keep up in class?
Yes! Our coaches are skilled at working with students at all levels and athletic backgrounds. Even if your child has never participated in an organized sport before, our coaches will provide encouraging, one-on-one support to make sure your child has a fun and safe experience while getting a great workout at the same time.
Does Krav Maga teach self-defense techniques for everyday life?
Yes! At its core, Krav Maga is a martial art that focuses on self-defense. Our Krav Maga system is designed to be practical and efficient. Our techniques pull from a range of martial arts tactics and disciplines to ensure that everything we teach can be replicated in a high-pressure, real-life situation. We believe that everyone should understand the basics of self-defense, and our curriculum is geared towards teaching strategies that work for a person of any size and skill level against a stronger, faster opponent. Krav Maga focuses on hand-to-hand combat, ground fighting, as well as how to disarm an assailant with a weapon. We teach our students how to defend themselves from a surprise attack from every side, as well as how to defend against an attacker with a knife or firearm.
What type of gear will I need?
The type of gear required for each class and each class level is slightly different. Krav Maga classes at all levels typically require focus mitts, gloves, and headgear. Adult classes and kid’s classes may require additional gear. BJJ classes only require a Gi. Our coaches will fill you in during your first class on what type of gear you need and when you will need it! Gear is available for purchase at the gym, or to borrow until you are able to purchase your own elsewhere.
Who will I be communicating with before my first class?
Coach Alexis or Coach Matt will be sending you an email to set up an in-person meeting and introduce you to your chosen martial art before your first class. Coach Alexis handles the majority of our communication, and will most-likely be the coach emailing you to set up initial appointments and send scheduling information. While Alexis has an extensive background in exercise and is a licensed Dietician Nutritionist, she does not currently teach regularly-scheduled classes.
